Better yet, create your own!

Join schools, students and community organizations around the world to unite in music and dance to bring awareness to bullying prevention. Nashville songwriter Tim Akers and performer 11-year-old Tristan McIntosh created a song called "You Can't Take That Away From Me" The above dance was created to go along with it.

An option would be for Brookings to create our own Unity dance that has a little more Unity built in? What do you think?

How can schools participate?

Determine a location. For example: the school cafeteria, the hallway, a classroom, the football field, or an assembly.

Consider who should participate. What about cheerleaders, athletes, band members, Knowledge Bowl participants, computer designers, faculty, administrators, custodians, coaches, at least one member of every school club and maybe even a principle or two. Then get the remainder of the students to join the dance because it takes the entire community to end bullying in our schools and the end of bullying begins with you!

Establish a date and time. Will could take place in the morning, during lunch, during half-time or after school?

Then Practice, practice, practice!

Say the dance is initially performed at lunch at BHHS.

Then a trip to K-School next and get the students, teachers and administrators to join in - Unity - get it? The High School students become an example for the young students.

Then a trip to Azalea for a final performance. Get those students, teachers and administrators to join in, too.

Post dance activities include:

Set up a table at each venue to have students sign "The End of Bullying Begins With Me" petition.

Give each student a 12" long piece of orange yarn and tie it on their wrist, if it's okay with them, to signify they are against bullying. Keep them on for the month and they might get get a surprise. (We are currently working with a couple of companies in Brookings to offer prizes.

Take butcher paper and make a large poster in the hall way for everyone to sign.

Consider a school dance for BHHS students to really show unity.

On Unity Dance Day
