Summer Heads Up
Program
This years theme ties in with the Summer Olympics. Our programs
will promote fitness of body. The Summer Heads Up Program encourages
youth to take the summer to realize how much Tech Neck is negatively
impacting the shape of their back and shoulders, how drastic that can
be, and to have a friend take a profile photo of them on their own
smarkphone so they can be reminded to keep their "Head Up" and eyes
forward when texting, listening to music, working on their iPad, etc
and the on-going health problems that are associated with Tech Neck,
Teck Neck, Kyphosis, Hunch Back, etc. if they don't take this time to
drastically change their posture during these activities.
There is a summer program for you, no matter what your age! Use this summer, away from school and classes, to improve your posture and correct the effects of Tech Neck from the way you've been using your smartphone or iPad.
It's not as though slouching will give you a hunchback in a day, but if you slouch day after day, and your muscles are not strong, your whole skeleton will change. The bottom line: How you sit is less important than how long you sit. Get up at least a couple of times an hour and walk, move, even while talking on the phone. If you cannot walk, at least stand.
Relaxed, straight sitting - Keep the core strong, shoulder blades active but not tight and spine erect with an expanded chest. It positively influences the body and mind by lifting confidence and self-esteem, and giving an energy and stamina boost. Standing or sitting straight can also rectify decreased energy and feelings of depression and stress, help build resilience and lift the mood. It optimizes oxygen intake to the body and brain by about 30 percent
Exercise - Stretching can improve spinal flexibility and relieve back pain. Exercises that strengthen the abdominal muscles may help improve posture.
Healthy lifestyle - Maintaining a healthy body weight and regular physical activity will help prevent back pain and relieve back symptoms from Tech Neck
Maintain good bone density. Proper diet with calcium and vitamin D and screening for low bone density.
When to see a
doctor - Make
an appointment if you notice an increased curve in your upper back or
spine. The individual bones (vertebrae) that make up a healthy spine
look like cylinders stacked in a column. Tech Neck occurs when the
vertebrae in the upper back become more wedge-shaped.

May I take your
picture: with your smartphone?
Ask your friends: "May I take your picture - with your
smartphone?" Ask them to stand normally, not forcing to stand up
straight. Then take a profile shot. People don't usually see a
profile of themselves.
Then they can check their posture on their own smartphone as a reminder to keep their "Head Up" and eyes forward whenever checking their smartphone, or texting or checking out their iPad. This might be the most important photo on their smartphone. Remind your friend to go to www.TheCitizensWhoCare.org/tech-neck.html for information on the dangers of Tech Nick and how to correct it before surgery is required. You've got the summer to work on it, whether you go with a brace (usually more consistant support), or stretches like yoga, or more. Make this summer really count for the future health of your body, especially your spine, neck and head!
