No U.S. Postal Service
No
more mail? What would Ben Franklin think No more birthday cards and bills or magazines and catalogs filling the mailbox. It's a worst-case scenario being painted for an organization that lost $8.5 billion in 2010 and seems headed deeper into the red this year. The face of the mail? It's the letter carrier or clerk. But hanging in the balance is a $1.1 trillion mailing industry. It employs more than 8 million people in direct mail, periodicals, catalogs, financial services, charities and other businesses that depend on the post office. Postmaster General
Patrick Donahoe has a plan to turn things around, if he can
get the attention of Congress and pass a series of hurdles,
including union concerns. (Editor's
note: How about no more delivery on Saturday? Many in
Congress say that that would be difficult for business and
some people to get their meds. Force FedX and UPS to deliver
on weekends. Or, a USPS employee is often at the post office
on Saturday sorting/delivering the mail to box holders. Have
a service like Special Delivery that businesses and
individuals who Have to Have Saturday mail delivery pay the
cost incured by the Post Office to have that one employee
deliver the Saturday mail to them. Much like COD. You want
your mail delivered on Saturday, either get a box at the
post office, or pay an extra fee. If you've signed up for
this service and refuse the mail when it is delivered, allow
the USPS return to sender. Those wanting the service would
set up an account with a personal or business credit card
that would be charged before delivery.) |
