U.S. Wants to Use Up our Oil Reserves as Quickly as Possible

Top Oil-Producing Country Intends to Focus '100 Percent' On Renewable Energy

U.S. Wants to Use Up our Oil Reserves as Quickly as Possible
Why are the Republicans in such a hurry to sell-off our natural resources. There's only so much left until we go back to dependency on the resources of other countries, most of whom have moved away from democracy. It seems that the Republicans want to eliminate the EPA and drill and frack and strip mine, destroying habitat, natural beauty and water and land quality for immediate profits without any plan for the long-term future of our children. Coal production in the U.S. has gone down because many energy plants are switching to low price natural gas. There has been so much fracking, and more on the way, that prices are plummeting and the producers want to sell it to foreign countries. And, our tax dollars are supporting this. Are they are so sure that there is an unlimited supply of cheap energy under U.S. soil that they don't have to spend ANY time developing alternative energy sources or products that utilize petroleum as part of them (plastic, etc.)

However, the number one producer of oil is preparing to cut back and let the U.S. take over. They want to keep their oil in the ground and and focus 100 percent on Renewable Energy. That's right. Saudi Arabia,

Right now, the U.S. is paying much less to import oil than most countries. However, Saudi Arabia is thinking of the future and if and when countries like the U.S. run out or come up short for oil, Saudi Arabia and other oil producing countries like them, have us at their will. In the meantime, they will be working on ways to reduce their own dependence on oil.

That's something we ought to be doing, but with our political system, we can only think in two-year increments and have little or no concentration on our future on this planet without oil.

I believe that it would be in the interest of future generations to follow Saudi Arabia, concentrate on developing renewable energy sources, and products that use renewable products for their creation. I would reestablish air, water and land quality oversight to all mining, drilling, and fracking operations and eliminate exports of our those national resources that cannot be replaced in a relatively short timeframe. - Gordon Clay

Top Oil-Producing Country Intends to Focus '100 Percent' On Renewable Energy
The U.S. is poised to become the world's top oil-producing country next year, according to estimates. (Flickr).

Saudi Arabia is the world's top producer of oil, extracting approximately 11.6 million barrels every day. The oil takes care of approximately two-thirds of the kingdom's own energy needs and is the lynchpin of the country's lucrative exports.

So how is the oil-rich country planning for its energy needs in the future? By focusing on renewable energy.

Earlier this week, Prince Turki Al Faisal Al Saud, a top spokesperson for Saudi Arabia, said that Saudi Arabia intends to generate 100 percent of its power from renewable sources, such as nuclear, solar, and low-carbon energies.

"Oil is more precious for us underground than as a fuel source," said the prince, whose country holds approximately 20 percent of the world's oil reserves, according to the International Energy Agency. "If we can get to the point where we can replace fossil fuels and use oil to produce other products that are useful, that would be very good for the world."

In related news, the U.S. is giving Saudi Arabia a run for the title of world's top oil-producing country, a boom that has left many experts surprised.

U.S. production of oil is on pace to rise 7 percent this year to a daily average of 10.9 million barrels. The Energy Department forecasts that production will continue its rise and average 11.4 million barrels per day in 2013.

"Five years ago, if I or anyone had predicted today's production growth, people who have thought we were crazy," Jim Burkhard, the head of joil markets research at IHS CERA tells The Huffington Post.

Should the projections hold, the U.S. will supplant Russia as the world's second-largest oil producer. Here's a look at the world's top oil-producing countries, according to Central Intelligence Agency statistics:

1. Saudi Arabia 11.6 million barrels per day
2. United States 10.9 million barrels per day
3. Russia 10.3 million
4. Iran 4.2 million (estimated)
5. China 4 million
