October 16, 2013

Partial transcript

October 16 board meeting in process:

Ryan: We are up to the non-agenda items, the citizens input, what everyone has been waiting for. We have 13 by my count for non-agenda comments. As a general rule, we would ask that for those of you who have submitted comments about a similar subject If someone has basically already said what you were going to say you don't necessarily need to repeat it. You can say, you know, "I second the person before me said. However, don't want to leave anybody out so what I would ask is that all of you that are here on the same topic before we actually begin in the public comment section can I just have a show of hands and we would like to be sure we're getting the names at a time. So, until all the hands go down, we want to have the names reported so that we're all . All of you who are here for comments on the girls basketball issues, can I have a show of hands and we would just like to get them .

Johnson: They're here to make comments cause they can do that... (35:00)

Ryan: For those who are here with positive comments of the program, can I have a show of hands and we would like to make a record of that.

Johnson: So what we really want is this recorded . So, what do we do, just call them and have them state their name.

Ryan:  We'll start on the left side and make our way .

Woman: Are you talking about just those who are going to be speaking?

Ryan: We're just talking about those name so that we're not having people leaving saying ___________________ If you do have a comment card in, and everything you had wanted to say has been said, by the time you get up there, we at least want to have your name down.

Josh Bruce, ____ Bruce, Mike Worthy, ________Woman, Brian Beck, Allen Clark, Cindy Beaman, Courtney Baines?  Jef Hatch, _______ Farmer, Sienna Worthy, Mona Chandler, Courtney Watwood? Iva Heart, Courtney ____, Sandy? Raider, Nancy Kay, Cindy Schofield, Susan Methain?

Johnson: Now, this isn't just individuals who are speaking. We want, if you're here in support of, we want to have your information. (36:48)

Man: Maybe you should have them write their names down as they leave.

Ryan: Did everybody sign in? as you came in? Would you put a check make by your name if you're somebody who's here for ____ so we'll go ahead and start with the first public comment card which was put in by John Cruz??

Cruz?? (37:30) First, I'm here in support of the basketball program I've seen whets been happening over the six years, been partly involved with the younger program, A lot of the kids who are over here helping Daryn and Chris Schofield coach,. When I was first watching the basketball program, I wasn't sure, you know, you always see a kid hustling, get hustled, wasn't the most skilled, (hitting) a kid - what he's supposed to do. Sometimes it's not about, it's all about you know about the team effort and I feel like Chris and Daryn have done just a wonderful job with the kids. None of us are perfect. We all fall short. In ah, but what I see and what I've seen happen with ideal, in a sense bullying on the other end where I see these parents Alice and Chris and Daryn and Cindy, what they're having to go through lately pretty much being broke down in the sense of like there, you know, what they've put into the schools , you know, I just see them being crushed. and it's heart breaking to me . I've worked with and a big part of the things I do with these schools are these people bringing me in the play structure. The expansion of the gym, the back side there, the girls team room, If these ladies weren't feeding me I wouldn't come. So, I mean, it's not ____ it's about the effort I see them put in, it makes me to want to put in effort too, I see the, their not ___ we're hard on kids . I'm a coach, you know, I coach soccer, you know, I help with the basketball, I don't know much about it, it's a learning experience because I go, yes, sometimes we fail. We're human too. Sometimes we might yell at you guys. It's only because we see the best in what we want most for each of you and what to see you guys give everything for your team also and I see Chris and Daryn do that every time they're on the court Yeah, you know, we like I said, we fall short sometimes we're a little too tough. It's a learning experience And, uh, but what I see them and their families ____ for If this district and these schools aren't going to support them after they are a Hugh support for the school it makes me not want to help support the schools. And that's where I sit with this. So, I'm, I feel like they've put 100% in and they're just, you know, like I said, we all are not perfect. There's areas we fail as we moving forward __________ that goes as teachers, principles, on down the line, parents, you know, but what I see them put l in as families they bring their families to every event, family oriented, their kids are on the floor coaching, , you know, I mean, even to the littlest one, . Eating dinner, after coaching high school, they';re in there with the younger kids 5th 6th 7th 8th graders you know, eating their dinner in between so they can spend another two hours and, it goes on. I think I probably ate my three minutes. Thank you very much. (41:01) (3:31) (Loud clapping after each character reference.)

Ryan: Cindy Beaman.

Beaman (41:13.) Okay. I speak every day but I'm nervous today cause I am emotional about this subject. and I am her in support Daryn and Alice Farmer and Cindy and Chris Schofield. and I just do what to go a little off topic from what I wrote down I had to write it down so I wouldn't get too off topic but as a person who has been on boards, Mr. Clay, I appreciate the time limit and I know that those who volunteer appreciate the time limit because the meeting could last forever, and you can see that point might be tonight, so I just wanted to comment about that since Mr. Clay commented about it earlier. and I know a lot of people can probably put their comments into those three minutes and I'm going to try to do that. My husband coaches and sometimes I wonder why it is that he would want to coach. in every game he's criticized about his tactics, his playing methods, discipline, playing time, and if you coach your own child, you get complaints about _____ or not your child is playing to often to penalize your child you are over compensating for that reason. I asked Buell Gonzalez why he would want to coach and we all know that he has a storm ahead of him related to what happened year. And he told me it's because he was, or is or had been dean and he had really seen _________ and he wanted a positive interaction with the kids. It's not about the money, it's about doing something he loves. Jess? does it because he loves the game , he loves the sport, he mainly loves kids, he loves competition. and, in this case with Chris and Daryn, they love basketball, they love all of those things and they love the kids. I've never seen anybody more dedicated than Chris and Daryn and their wives. And, we all know that Daryn doesn't do it for the money, so. But because of a few people, it's not just about criticizing their coaching style or complaining about whether their children have been playing, it's been an attack on their integrity, their character, and their livelihood. And that's why I'm her today. because if you have a complaint about coaching, please, the school board obviously needs to hear about that. if there are issues related to that. but when it gets personal, nobody is going to volunteer to do anything (Think about that statement as it has been turned on the girls who have allegedly been bullied. It been personal attacks on them as a group.) And I feel that it is important for the volunteers of this community to know that if it comes to that that we will stand up for them. (Regardless is it is true or not.) In business you learn for every disgruntled employee or customer it wipes out 10 happy customers. (This isn't business, this is abuse.) I'm hear to tell you that for every complaint against Daryn and Chris there are hundreds of people who are in support of them. who want them to be there and appreciate the time that they have put there, put out there for our children. And what I'm asking for this board is, I understand that the outside agency that you refereed this to has come back and said that they have stopped investigating and I presume that's because they found nothing. What I'm asking for the school board to do is to declare the matter closed, (without due process) so we can put an end to all of this. In a small town this is destroying people . Good people (Not to mention destroying girls on the team for the last four years with retribution) If nothing else comes from this I want Daryn and Chris and Cindy and Alice to know we support them I also appreciate the __________________ and how many people are in their support and all of the people for raising their hands today. (44:52) (3:39)

Ryan: Next up is Brian Banks.

Banks: (Start condensed transcription - 45:10) This is from me and my wife, She submitted a paper too is that all right?

Ryan: The next comment card is from Michael _____.

Michael? (1:02:42) Many Physical therapist. I am publicly and ??privately? acquainted with both supports and detractors______ and I understand both positions. I would implore the board to use every means in your disposal to put an end to this matter. I see the divisiveness that's coming from it It's tearing apart families, friends communities, We've already seen some people leave the meeting tonight which breaks my heart because this should be a meaningful dialogue coming to some reasonable conclusion that everybody can live with. (This situation was set up by the board chair where there was no room for anything but supportive comments from the community.) It just saddens me to see our community, our family pulled apart like this. More...Look around the room to see what's best for the girls. (I didn't see any of the 15 parents or girls that were complainants in the room. Is that's what's best for the girls. More retribution?) (1:04:56) (2:14)

Ryan: The next comment card is from Alan Clark.

Clark: (1:05:16) well I'm going to ...I started coaching with Daryn in 2006. I've coached most of the kids in this room. on either the peewee leagues or high school level. I was the assistant to Daryn about four years ago, at the JV level in his first year. You know, Daryn and I weren't always friends. We were more like acquaintances for the first couple of years. We had some of the same interests. It wasn't even my ________. I had another guy in town. But, you know, as I got to know Daryn, ..........the Farmers did that, etc. ... 2008 - Two in school together. Chris. Breaks my heart they didn't want to play...Chris threw a clip board across the room because he was mad that something wasn't going right. 1:08:15) and you know what happened. We picked it up and moved on. And, I've never seen anybody mistreated. Made a yes or no question list. Need to give your kids a little thicker skin. They're not always going to like us, the people they work with, ... If you don't like it move along and find somewhere else. (1:10:19) (5:03)

Ryan: The next comment card is from Jocelyn Kay:

Kay: (1:10:43) I'm speaking on behalf of Angie Kay. (Basically, if you aren't happy, simply don't play. (1:13:33) (2:50)

Ryan: The next card is from Sienna Worthy:

Worthy: (1:13:45) Okay. Speaking on behalf of Elizabeth Norman. BHBB team manger last year. (1:14:43) (:48)

Ryan: The next card is from Tanya Raider.

Raider: (1:14:56) My goodness. Especially you girls for getting up here and saying what you believe in, kudos. (Does she have the same kudos for the girls who stood up for what they believe in on June 19th). Do your best. (Faced the board) That's what we're asking of you guys. Fix it, make it right. It isn't fair and it definitely needs to end... (1:17:30) (2:34)

Ryan: Last card, Jef Hatch.

Hatch: (1:17:41) So first I need to say a couple of things. One I am here as an individual and not here as the voice of the Curry Coastal Pilot. Even though I am the Sports Editor. Two: Bullying is not okay. There is no place for it in the school world, in the home, and it's simply not okay. I would applaud Mr. Clay's efforts to bring a little bit more recognition to the fact that there is bullying out there and reduce the amount of bullying that happens. That said, in my experience I have not seen bullying happen in the high school basketball program. Whether in the girls program or the boys program. I have not seen it. I've been in the room after losses, I've been in the room after wins. I've been in the room when the coaches didn't know I was there. watching practice, observing. And I don';t have (a child?) in the program. So that my vision is not blinded that I have a child _____ to play sports. Hopefully my eyes are open because I have a responsibility to the community to speak the truth (as he sees the truth) when it comes to reporting on the things that go on in this community. I'm not blinded by it. and I haven't seen bullying. period. ..more here...I've been in situation where Chris and Daryn have used language, not curse words, but that might be detrimental to the psychic of young women. But I believe that as MEN, and we're all a little insensitive, they didn't know the words they were choosing hurt. Did they hurt. Yes. Was it bullying. No. (Was it harassment?) Regardless if the accusation that have been made, the truth is that these are two very good men. They are very good for our community, they are good for their families, they're good for this girls basketball team. I would implore the school board to do two things. 1. Make sure that the policies regarding bullying and accusations of bullying are set strongly in place. so that bullying doesn't;t take place. and so that false accusations don't take place. The second thing I would implore you to do, is to refuse to accept Daryn Farmer's resignation , hold him to his contract, and let him coach this team. along with Chris Schofield. (1:20:49) (Clapping) I'll say this. Daryn Farmer and Chris Schofield make me want to be a better man. Thank-you. (1:21:03) (3:21)

Ryan: (1:21:11) I want to thank everyone for taking the time to come and make comments . I love our community. At this time we comments and communication. I'd like to turn it over the board for for any comments, questions, We've been here for a long time and we're not done yet.

Raleigh: I just wanted to make some comments about ...

Chambers: Appreciate Don Iler's article in the paper. Given us a lot to think about it. (1:25:31)

Johnson: Prior to us doing this, training...Passion for those who don't have a voice.

Farmer:  (1:28:06) It really is a privilege to be in association with all of you.

Ryan: Any other comments before we...Going into executive session. (1:29:00)
