Talk with your kids about Oral Health

The foundation for healthy permanent teeth in children and teenagers is laid during the first years of life. Poor diet, poor habits of food intake and inadequate tooth brushing habits during the first 2 years are directly related to tooth decay in primary teeth. This further increases the risk of developing tooth decay in permanent teeth. Dental decay is the most common chronic disease in young people between the ages of 5 and 17. Here are some tips:

1. Limit soda drinking. Kids are drinking more soft drinks than ever, both in school and at home. Sugar in sweetened sodas can cause cavities, and acidic flavor additives (found in unsweatened sodas too) can erode and damage tooth enamel.

2. Play it safe. More than 200,000 injuries to the mouth and jaw occur each year in contact sports. Kids can prevent injuries by wearing a mouth guard while playing.

3. Avoid oral piercing. You can chip your teeth while eating, sleeping, talking and chewing which can lead to a root canal or tooth extraction. The tongue can become infected and swell to such a degree that it interferes with breathing.
