Whereas
Curry County 6th, 8th and 11th grade students outperformed
other Oregon high-school students in all five categories of
drug and alcohol use according to the 2010 Oregon Wellness
Student Survey except in the category of the use of
marijuana where only 11% of 8th graders said they used it in
the past 30 days

Whereas,
letters to the editor in the past have seemed to communicate
that many parents object to having to be held responsible
for their children's illegal activities, even under their
own roof and control.
Whereas,
the Through My Eyes essay contest participated in by the
BHHS senior class over the last years six years
indicates that alcohol continues to be a big problem within
the high-school population.
Whereas
the Lane County Board of Commissioners just approved changes
to their county's year-old "social host" ordinance adding
that those who host or allow any gathering where people
younger than 21 drink or use illegal drugs can be fined as
much as $1,000.
Whereas
approving a similar ordinance would put all households in
Curry County under a similar ordinance - since city
ordinances in the three major cities would only cover 40% of
the population.
Whereas
the counties and cities "No Tolerance" policy would be
strengthened by such an ordinance, if we really mean it and
our public safety employees and our county judges would take
it serious.
Therefore,
TheCitizensWhoCare.org asks that a similar ordinance be
adopted by the Curry County Board of Supervisors.
