Marriage and the Bible

Gordon Clay here. Valentine's Day is tomorrow. And there will a lot of proposals to marry. Before you propose, read what Paul has to say in I Corinthians 7:1: "Nothing wrong with marriage and there's nothing wrong with abstaining from marriage. My advice for the unmarried and for widows is that it is acceptable for them to remain single, just as I am. But if you don't have enough self control, then go ahead and get married. After all, it is better to marry than to burn with desire."

Verse 28: "It isn't wrong to marry, even if you have never been married before. But those who marry will have a lot of trouble, and I want to protect you from this."

37: "But it is better to have self-control and to make up your mind not to marry."

38: "So the man who marries his girl does right, but the man who does not marry will do better."

Regarding a widow: 39: "A wife should stay married to her husband until he dies. Then she is free to marry again, but only to a man who is a follower of the Lord."

40: "However, I think I am obeying God's Spirit when I say she would be happier to stay single." The Bible tells me so.

I think the best solution would be to toss marriage out of the legal system completely. The government can issue civil unions, and churches can decide for themselves whether they want to marry people and whether they will allow those married in their tradition to divorce.

And what about gay marriage?  As comedian Jason Stuart says, "I wish you straight people would let us gay people get married. If you did, we’d stop marrying you!"

Think about it and have a Happy Valentine's Day no matter who your Valentine is.
