Gordon Clay here. Tomorrow at the First Friday Salon, we will have a free showing of Bag it: Is your life too plastic? at 6pm at the Chetco Public Library
In this touching and often flat-out-funny film, we follow "everyman" Jeb Berrier as he embarks on a global tour to unravel the complexities of our plastic world. What starts as a film about plastic bags evolves into a wholesale investigation into plastic and its effect on our waterways, oceans and even our own bodies. We see how our crazy-for-plastic world has finally caught up to us and what we can do about it. Today. Right now.
The film makes a compelling case that the use of money and resources to create this product serves no particular purpose and is a real (but silent) drain on the economy. It offers some alternatives for personal use, as well as some larger examples of communities that have taken action. It also paints a convincing picture of big business (especially the plastic bag lobby) as unscrupulous villains.
When I was growing up, I don't remember seeing ANY plastics. This film has made me want to get back to living that way without the dangers, pollution and chemicals that plastics require. How about you? Can you even go a day without plastic?
"First Friday Salon" is a free evening to see and talk about documentaries that, most likely, would never show in the area. The series is sponsored by TheCitizensWhoCare.org whose main purpose is to "Give you something to think about." The movie starts promptly at 6pm tomorrow so join us, won't you.
