Gordon Clay here. Next Wednesday is the start of the 3rd Annual Pistol River Wave Bash where wind surfers from around the world start shredding the waves at Pistol River State Park for prizes and trophies.
The local riders will be competing with world renowned wind surfers like two time World Champion in Stand Up Paddling, Kai Lenny and Red Bull competitor Levi Siver, both from Hawaii along with another 80 some competitors so far.
Reigning Champion for the Women is Ingrid Larouche. She usually dominates for the gals, but event organizer, Sam Bittner placed second in Santa Cruz, and is hoping to sail with Ingrid again in the finals. Hood River local, Fiona Wylde, 15 years old, came in 3rd in Santa Cruz, and is a rising star to watch as she competes in the Women and Youth division.
Last year AWT champion, Nathan Mershon is fighting to reclaim his win from last year in Pistol River as well as 2010 winner, Kevin Pritchard.
The youth winner from Santa Cruz, Harley Stone, is coming to see if he can take home another win.
There will be a wave clinic open to everyone at noon next Wednesday at the Pistol River State Park and then at 8pm, come meet the wind surfers at their annual meet and greet dinner starting at 7p at the Curry County Fairgrounds ($15 for the public). The Pistol River Trio will be playing at the opening ceremony.
Competition starts Thursday at 10am as conditions allow and goes through Sunday, if need be. Sunday night at 8pm will be the Awards Dinner (again $15 for the public). Who says there's nothing to do in Curry County?
