Gordon Clay here. What is the fruit or vegetable with the highest level in pesticides? Lettuce, Corn, Asparagus, Apples, or Strawberries?
The seventh annual report by the Environmental Working Group, a public health advocacy group, analyzed government data on 53 fruits and vegetables, identifying which have the most and least pesticides AFTER washing and peeling.
Apples were the most contaminated with 92% containing two or more pesticides. It appears that more pesticides and fungicides are being applied after the harvest so the fruit can have a longer shelf life.
The worst fruits also include strawberries, peaches, imported nectarines and grapes and blueberries while pineapples, mangoes, domestic cantaloupe, kiwis, watermelon and grapefruit top the "clean" list.
For vegetables, celery, spinach, sweet bell peppers, potatoes, lettuce, kale and collard greens top the dirty list while onions, corn, avocado, asparagus, sweet peas, eggplant, cabbage, sweet potatoes and mushrooms topped the clean list.
Pesticides are known to be toxic to the nervous system, cause cancer, disrupt hormones and cause brain damage in children and pregnant women are advised to avoid foods containing pesticide at all costs.
Eating five servings of fruits and vegetables from the "dirty dozen" list would mean you'd get an average of 14 different pesticides daily.
Most people can lower the volume of pesticides they consume daily by 92% by choosing five from the clean list. From this list you would consume fewer than two. And eating organic is even safer. Do the math.
