Don't assume I'm Christian.
Gordon Clay here. Happy Holidays to you. That's right, holidays. There's six left before the New Year.
There's Ashura which happened on Monday (12/5) when many Sunni Muslims fast during this day, because Musa or Moses and his people obtained a victory over the Egyptian Pharaoh.
Today is Bodhi Day (12/8) a day that Buddhists celebrate Buddha's attainment of enlightenment under the Bodhi tree.
There's Las Posadas on the 16th which is a tradition based on preparing for Christs birth that involves the re-enactment of Mary and Joseph searching for lodgings.
There's Hanukkah beginning on the 20th celebrating the Maccabees recapture of the second Temple from the Syrian Greeks in 165 B.C. This period is celebrated by exchanging gifts and making contributions to the poor.
The Winter solstice occurs on December 22nd and marks the day of the year with the least hours of daylight for those living north of the Tropic of Cancer.
There's Christmas which falls on Sunday (12/25) and celebrates the nativity, or birth, of Jesus Christ with gift giving.
Of course, on the 26th you take everything back.
Also on the 26th is the start of Kwanzaa, an African-American celebration that goes through New Year's Day. It is an important part of sharing African heritage and culture with family including a feast and gift giving.
So, you see, there's a lot more to celebrate this holiday season. We can be so inclusive by greeting everyone with "Happy Holidays". However, if you wish me a Merry Christmas, assuming I'm Christian, I'll wish you a Joyous Kwansaa, making my own assumptions.
